WELCOME
Welcome to the website of the Fort Homestead Association, a group dedicated to the protection, preservation, and restoration of the Abraham Fort Homestead, built sometime between 1742 and 1759, located on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, New York.
The house is located on Route 9 (South Road) in the Town of Poughkeepsie, across from Red Lobster and between the Miracle Ford dealership and the Best Western Hotel. A brown stockade fence formerly obscured the house from the road, but the fence has been removed and the house is now visible from the road through the trees.
In 2004, the home was slated for demolition. Due to a Girl Scout Gold Award project of the Fort Family Burying Ground across the street, co-founders Judy Wolf and Ginny Buechele researched the house and found it to be a point of historic interest. The homestead was declared a local historic landmark and demolition was halted.
The Fort Homestead Association formed with the intent to aquire ownership of the house and land. In the future, we hope to restore the homestead and it open it as a living history center.
